homecoming

We have now been home about 2 & 1/2 weeks.  It’s been crazy.  Poor Steve has been stuck at home taking care of two kids in our messy house while trying to transition and get used to everything, and I of course have been at work.  He has been super dad.  My turn starting this week since he goes back to school and I use the rest of my FMLA leave.  I’m scared.

We came home with oxygen for Hank (no, I don’t know how long he will be on it), and an NG tube since he still wasn’t eating everything by mouth.  We have been trying to turn down the oxygen and have been pretty successful, but he sure likes it so it will be on for while.  We did loose the NG tube last week (we found it on the floor in the middle of the night), and haven’t had to put it back in yet, though it has been tempting since he really hates his medicines and throws a fit every time he has to have them.  We have had two doctor visits here and have now been upgraded to every 2 weeks instead of weekly.  Hank has been gaining weight nicely since we left the hospital (not too much and not too little) and now weighs about 11 pounds.  He is doing really good developmentally it seems and loves to stare at his new surroundings.  He can track Drew across the room and will do that regularly and is also starting to grab for his toys a bit.  He smiles quite a bit and seems to be content.

Some things he/we have had to get used to.

New bed.  We sit in the living room all day, then pack up and roll everything (bassinet, oxygen concentrator, etc.) into the bedroom for bed.  What a fun routine.

New toys.  Hank likes his swing, and his bouncer.  He seems to miss his swing at the hospital though.  He likes to lay in his playground and will reach for his toys.

New baths.  He really seems to love his baths.  It’s a little challenging at times to bath him with all the extra stuff, but we are starting to figure it out.

New challenges.  I think bringing a new baby home always has challenges are we are definitely working through those.  Drew is discovering when we aren’t watching as close and is getting into quite a bit more trouble, but he is doing really well.  It’s definitely been a learning experience.
